Diet and Weight Loss - The Secret Ingredient to Walking For Weight Loss

Do you really need to walk for hours to lose weight? Burning calories while walking doesn't have to be a slow process. You don't need to walk for hours at a time. There is a secret weapon that you can implement that will speed up the fat burning furnace. Why not get the biggest return for your weight loss efforts? Does 20 minutes a day three days a week sound like something you could do?
The secret ingredient to your weight loss recipe is "intervals". What is an interval? Basically an interval is a period of time built into your workout. What you do during the interval is the real secret.
Let me give you an example. Your normal walk is say 20 minutes. For two or three one minute periods, interspersed into your walk, you will increase the intensity of your exercise. You can do this by walking faster or jogging. You could raise the incline on the treadmill, or walk uphill. You could even stop your walk and do sets of jumping jacks, mountain climbers, or anything that raises your heart rate a little higher than normal. Then go back to your normal walking pace.
Here's another example. Start walking. Walk for 5 minutes. Now jog for 1 minute, or raise the elevation on the treadmill. Go back to your normal walking pace for another 5 minutes. Now again jog for 1 minute, or raise the elevation on the treadmill. Now finish the last eight minutes of your walk.
The benefit of using intervals is not the extra few calories that you burn during your workout. No, the benefit comes from a raised metabolism. After completing your walking and interval workout, your metabolism will be raised for hours after you finish.
So if you want to raise your metabolism, burning more calories, and losing more weight, incorporate the "secret ingredient" into your walking routine. 20 minute workouts three days a week is good, four to five days a week is even better. Turn your body into a fat burning furnace. Don't forget to eat right, eating high quality, healthy foods.
